The project is envisioned by the Department of Education (DepEd) to help address hunger and malnutrition concerns in the country, according to the DepEd secretary as he explained that "as part of the department's poverty alleviation programs, Gulayan sa Paaralan will foster public awareness on both the health, nutritional and economic benefits of establishing school, household and community gardens."
Report on Gulayan sa Paaralan is a project implemented in every school. For Calawis Elementary School, parents and pupils play a vital role in the preparation of this project. Parents made a bayanihan for the preparation of the garden to be planted with different kinds of vegetables. The pupils then where oblinged to bring seeds to be planted in the garden. Pupils were grouped and assigned to make plots in their EPP class. They palanted the following vegetables:

They planted also vines vegetables. We provided support to grow them well. This vegetables will help their families for their living.
